The ongoing new approach envisages synchronising with EU regulations in three key areas to promote the free flow of trade: food and farm exports, energy, and carbon trading.

Business Requests

A prominent industry organisation last month released a list of further requests in other sectors to aid exporters deal with new bureaucratic hurdles that has impacted the export of products.

Its member poll reported that a majority of business members felt that the current arrangement was impeding sales growth.

A host of further domains could, feasibly, see a parallel method – convergence with single market rules – in exchange for reducing post-Brexit barriers across industry, in the car industry, chemicals, or for example in arrangements for VAT.

Continental Response

European capitals were unimpressed by the lack of ambition in last year's reset, notably the British rejection of suggestions advanced by some analysts regarding the effective return of British goods to the internal market.

On the national stage, the leadership also anticipates being outflanked on EU relations not just one opposition party, but also others, which is campaigning in its key electoral areas in May's elections.
