UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a abandoned church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
