The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
