The Mayor-Elect affirms plans to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly after his triumph in November.
"The choice was based on our family's safety and the importance of directing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he hails from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting very different than his previous Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
