The Gruesome Animated Film Ending That Stays With Fans
Out of every adult-oriented animated films I have ever viewed, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the terror-laced ending of the graphically gory and highly provocative film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker created a dark, melancholy , frequently brutal world with a few small , desolate hints of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it came from an impulse to advance the medium even more, the filmmaker stated that it was actually an attempt to communicate a global, cross-cultural message regarding “the shared root of every conflict.”
This theme is communicated by means of a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously based on a famous series of cuddly characters.
Maturing in a culture built around warmongering and the military-industrial complex, many of these animals are obsessed with killing the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text that claims the bears they used to be kings of the woods, before these creatures expelled them.
Others did not entirely fallen for the indoctrination, and choose to experiment with drugs and fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these bright beings have visible genitals , obvious sex drives.
For one particularly cruel, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns becomes a road to control — and especially to supremacy over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor , an apparent sociopath , and while horror takes over his group and takes his fellow soldiers individually, he grabs more and more power on his own behalf, via progressively violent, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are enduring their own nightmare, as a growing, deadly beast in their forest.
“Initially, it appears as a humorous movie,” the director commented. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and sad film. And by the end, it becomes a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the most quirky films from a legendary animator, that uncover a mischievous joy in allowing animated figures curse, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Subsequently it turns into closer to a more grim movie by that same creator, with increasingly explicit brutality , a tangible relation to the real horror of war.
Ultimately, it becomes an outright Grand Guignol massacre.
The fear which makes the film a perfect Halloween movie begins well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted fans of gore, for enthusiasts of graphic films who want to watch something they have not watched previously, and who can handle a story that offers unflinching brutality.
See it with the lights off with no disturbances, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
