Los Angeles Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Just One Week After Major Winter Storm.
Following a week of significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unusually warm temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
On Friday midday, the temperature soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, according to the National Weather Service. This breaks the old record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on official maps for the region.
Public Health Warnings
The weather service cautioned that Friday's conditions posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Reversal
This sharp rise in heat follows closely after a intense storm system that pummeled the area earlier in the week. That system brought high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, leading to mudslide risks for many residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also triggered a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
The outlook suggests cooler conditions is coming. Readings were expected to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by overnight.
Additional areas that hit the 90-degree mark were Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to reach the upper eighties.
In the coming days, central LA can anticipate weather in the eighties, with a further cooldown on tap for the start of March.
