Israelis mark two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The representative stated the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Critical Points in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- After-conflict management of the region
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location feels like home now and until every captive return none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home again, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel says forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist one woman explained: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in as payment for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the music event, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, attacks were reported in the morning of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the night falls, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my little child who rests his face on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis reported another two fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south region, medics said.
