England to Start the European Championship 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they attain the anticipated passage for a tournament taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s fixture since May 2016, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is almost certain to welcome the national team for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, if they top Group B, their last-16 tie would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Opening and Demonstration
The championship was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were heckled as they arrived the location by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel’s national side to be removed from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The opening game of the European Championship will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will include the Dragons if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from next season, will attract households and help connect with a broader range of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through that route.
Stadiums and Playoffs
Villa Park and The North London arena round out the event’s nine venues. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight played at the national stadium of each host.
The qualification draw will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be renovated in time, on 6 December 2026.
