Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

His passing follows shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
